Westfield White rebounded strongly from an ugly loss early in the day with a 12-0 win over Summit. Chris Varano threw 3 strong innings and only allowed 2 hits and Liam Heinbokel closed things out with 2 solid innings of his own on the mound. The defense behind Varano and Heinbokel was flawless and even outstanding at times. Shortstop Nick Mele made a great bare handed grab and throw of a slow roller that just got past Heinbokel at the mound and recorded the out at 1st. Mele received a Blue Ball award for the play.
While the Westfield pitchers and defense were working towards the shutout, the offense was busy pounding out 14 hits. Varano and Devin Anderson led the way with 3 hits each and Brett Robertshaw, Michael Mobarakai and Eric Varakian each had 2 hits. Nick Mele had 4 RBIs, including a towering 3 run home run to deep left center field. Scott Tupper and Hopper Murray each had RBI singles during a big 1st inning rally.
Up next for Westfield is Bridgewater American in the Basking Ridge Summer Tournament on Monday at 7:45 PM.
