Westfield Defeats Warren 7-1 in Initial 2010 District Game

Vin Difilippo and Chris Rinaldi combined to throw a 3-Hitter against a tough Warren lineup and Brett Robertshaw blasted a mammoth 3 run homerun to give Westfield some breathing room late in the contest. The Westfield defense was stellar behind the "The Entertainer" and "The Coach" all afternoon and there were 2 Blue Ball awards handed out during the game. Robertshaw received the 1st Blue Ball award for an outstanding diving catch in left field. Rinaldi and Boutsikaris teamed up to receive the other defensive award for a tough play on a ground ball deep in the hole at short and a great stretch a 1st base to record the out.

Difilippo was masterful in his 4 innings of work on the mound and he shutdown the Warren offensive threat so that Westfield's bats could get going.

Eric Varakian started the scoring in the 1st inning when he walked, stole 2nd and then came around to score on an RBI single by Nick Mele. Westfield added two more runs in the 3rd and took a 3-0 lead. Devin “The Animal” Anderson led off with a walk and Chris Boutsikaris reached on an error. Anderson and Boutsikaris scored on RBI ground balls by Robertshaw and Hopper Murrray.

Westfield extended the lead to 4-0 in the 3rd when Difilippo doubled, took 3rd on a passed ball and stole home on a wild pitch.

Westfield broke the game open in the 5th when Robertshaw’s long HR banged around in the top part of the trees behind the left field fence at Gumbert Field #2 and eventually landed in the parking lot. The blast put Westfield ahead by the score of 7-0. Robertshaw finished with 2 hits and 4 RBIs.

Warren managed a run in the 6th on a walk and an infield hit, but Westfield was able to close it out at 7-1.

Westfield faces Springfield next in District play on Sunday at 9:00 AM.
