Robertshaw and Varano Throw Gem in Shutout of Chatham

Brett Robertshaw and Chris Varano combined to throw a 3-hit shutout and the Westfield offense pounded out 15 hits and 14 runs to power the Blue Devils past Chatham 14-0. Robertshaw allowed only 2 base runners in his 3 innings on the mound and “Mariano” Varano was equally effective in his inning of work in the mercy rule shortened game. The Westfield defense continued to impress and the highlight was a flawlessly executed 6-3-5 double play on a hard ground ball to short -- Westfield recorded the out at 1st and then Chris Boutsikaris threw a laser to Liam Heinbokel at 3rd base to nail the runner from 2nd who attempted to advance.

Nick Mele, Vin Difilippo and Chris Boutsikaris continued their hot hitting in leading the Westfield offense. Mele was 3 for 3 with 2 doubles and 3 runs scored. Difilippo was 2 of 2 with a double and 2 runs scored and Boutsikaris was 2 for 2 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored. Robertshaw and Varano helped their own cause with 2 hits each and Devin Anderson (triple), Scott Tupper, Hopper Murray, Liam Heinbokel, Chris Rinaldi and Michael Mobarakai each had key hits in the run scoring innings. Eric Varakian started the run scoring in the 1st inning by earning a lead off walk, stealing 2nd and coming around to score on the first of Mele’s 3 hits.

Westfield is off on Friday and they open District play on Saturday with a 3:00 PM game against Warren.
