Westfield defeated Chatham by the score of 11-1 in Central Jersey Baseball League play. Michael Mobarakai and Brett Robertshaw were solid on the mound and the duo scattered 6 hits while striking out 4.
Westfield's defense made some solid plays behind Mobarakai and Robertshaw. In the 1st inning, Mobarakai was awarded a Blue Ball (award for great defensive play) when he made a quick stab of a hard come backer to the mound and threw the batter out at 1st. 2nd Baseman Eric Varakian teamed up with Robertshaw for another Blue Ball in the 4th. Robertshaw deflected a hard line drive up the middle and it hit off of his glove and rolled slowly towards 2nd base. Varakian read the deflection, charged hard, barehanded the ball and threw a rocket to 1st base for the out. Robertshaw was involved with another Blue Ball play when he made a good play on a hard grounder back towards the mound. His throw to 1st was in the dirt, but 1st baseman Vin "The Entertainer" Difilippo scooped, juggled, bobbled and then held onto the ball for the out. For good measure, the Entertainer flipped over the Chatham runner who was sliding into 1st base and then he held the ball up for the ump (and the fans) to see as he tumbled to the ground in a cloud of dust.
Westfield offense was powered by Varakian (3 for 3 w/2 RBIs), Chris Varano (2 for 3 w/an RBI), Devin Anderson (2 for 2 w/2 RBIs), Scott Tupper (2 RBIs) and Nick Mele (3 run home run). Mele's home run in the 2nd inning was a towering blast to deep center field and the shot put Westfield ahead for good. Mobarakai and Difilippo also had key hits for Westfield in the run scoring innings.
Next up for Westfield White is South Orange Maplewood in the District Championship game on Tuesday night at 5:45 at Gumbert Field #2.
