Murray Throws 2-Hit Shutout Over Summit For District Win

Westfield White faced off against Summit tonight in their 3rd game of the District 12 12U tournament. Hopper Murray threw 4 innings of 2 hit, shutout ball and Vin Difilippo, Nick Mele and Devin Anderson hit long home runs to propel Westfield to an 11-0 win in the mercy rule shortened contest.

Murray was extremely efficient on the hill and he only threw 32 pitches in his 4 innings of work. He got out of one inning throwing only 3 pitches and another throwing only 7 pitches. Vin “The Entertainer” Difilippo played stellar defense at the hot corner behind Murray and he made two great plays to rob Summit batters of hits. He was awarded a Blue Ball on a diving stab of a hard grounder down the line. On the play, Vin entertained the crowd by fully extending on his dive and immediately getting to his feet and throwing a strike to Chris Boutsikaris at 1st base.

While Murray was shutting down the Summit offense, the Westfield offense was pounding out hits. Eric Varakian and Liam Heinbokel each had a pair of hits. Mele and Anderson hit 3 run home runs and Difilippo added a solo shot immediately following Mele’s blast in the 5 run 3rd inning. Mele finished with 4 RBIs, Anderson with 3 RBIs and Heinbokel with 2 runs batted in. Boutsikaris and Tupper also had hits for Westfield. Michael Mobarakai was robbed of a hit in the 2nd inning when his line drive which was heading down the line towards left field was stabbed on a great play by the Summit 3rd baseman.

Westfield continues District play on Wednesday when the face South Orange Maplewood on Gumbert Field #3 at 5:45.
